The urban communication and aesthetics exhibition
23rd August to 5th October 2003
Kunstraum Kreuzberg/Bethanien
Berlin
As chance would have it, we happened to be in
Berlin, just at the opening night of Backjumps'
live issue. For those of you who don't know
that, Backjumps is a legendary Berlin magazine
that's been present for years on graffiti scene
worldwide.
The exhibition took place in Kreuzberg, a Berlin
borough which is mainly the residence for Turks
and alternative artists. The good-sized space
of Kunstraum had a few disadvantages, like unbearable
heat and lack of fresh air, but we were trying
hard to overcome this with a bottle of beer
and were slowly going over the rooms.
The list of invited artists was quite impressive.
We'll mention some of them:
ASH / BBC... ..Kopenhagen
Akim & Zast one... ..Berlin
Cakes... ..Prag
Delta INC... .. Amsterdam
Jay1 /BBC... ..Paris
Lokiss... ..Paris
OBEY... ..LA
O'Clock... ..Paris
Phos4... ..Berlin
Our intention is not to analyze the works on
view. We've seen undoubtedly interesting
things as well as some trash. In a moment we
started to wonder wouldn't it be more fresh
and honest to write a piece on a train. Isn't
it closer to the art to see this piece on the
move afterwards?
The quantity of these potential artists could
perhaps bring some real one to the surface.
Nevertheless, most of these guys (and we are
not an exception) sometimes get ideas about
being bigger artists than we really are.
All in all it was worth visiting the opening
night in Kunstraum, if only because of greeting some old friends...
